Halloween

hall1.jpeg

I love candy, and I’ve been eating it regularly for the past few weeks. Sugar is my weakness. I love just about anything sweet and halloween is the perfect excuse to feed my vice. I have never really participated in this season and it’s funny how my children view this time of year. They have only trick or treated twice and I think they really liked it! I’m not sure what’s in store this year as covid-19 has upended everything!

I wonder about so many aspects of our lives we don’t question until we are faced with it directly. Door to door, receiving items from strangers doesn’t seem to go hand in hand with our local pandemic rules. I’ve heard of people putting out a large bowl of treats on their front step and letting the kids take as they wish, at any rate they wish. Some say this is lazy, others say, you miss out on the cute costumes when you just place out the candy like a dish or dog food. Here! Take whatever you want!

If no one can go door to door, and no one can really make contact, will tricking or treating still happen?

Well as far as I am concerned, it doesn’t matter what corona decides to do with this North American experience. I’m stocked up on twix and gummies! I’m straight!

TEN YEARS! Whoo-hoo! My fist thought, is I’m so happy we made it here! There were a few times during this journey I thought I wouldn’t be able to see the light but here I am! Here we are! Many changes have happened to our little hop from that first February in 2010 to now!

We started out with 4 cutting chairs and now have grown to 8. We started out with an vision for eco awareness and now are trendsetting in this area. We hope that through all of the changes, you our valued client, still gets the same great feeling when you come to our shop for a service.

During these ten years, I have grown so much and have developed so much as a business owner and I hope the education I have taken up to this point will allow me to be able to still be here for ten more years. I’d like to thank each and every staff member of the team from then to now. All of your efforts have brought us here. All of my clients that followed me from Society and the new ones I found from being on Academy, Thank you!

Outdoor Running

abigail-keenan-HfBZFnHgVKo-unsplash.jpg

Winter running! Do you do it? I personally enjoy running outside in the winter. Everyone assumes that it is dangerous and alarmingly cold, but you would be surprised. First of all, you get quite warm as you run and your temperature regulates quite fast. I recommend running outside for at least 3 miles/5k. Anything less makes it really hard to warm up..

I have a particular running uniform and it does include a jacket with reflective trim because I run first thing in the morning, and in the colder months, the sun has not yet come up. I wear cold gear running pants, long sleeve cold gear shirt, t-shirt over top, a hoodie, and my reflective wind breaking jacket on top. I wear a belaclava and 2 hoods. On my hands, I use gloves instead of mittens, and I have cold gear socks as well. I know a lot of people that use the running clips on their shoes for more grip, but I have never had a problem. If it looks icy, don’t run fast. On days when there is too much snow, I run on the road. Just be sure to run INTO traffic as some drivers still text and drive.

The air is so fresh when you run in the winter and I find that the cold air really invigorates me. Make sure you lotion up well and be prepared for frozen lashes, nostrils and fogged up glasses. If you are thinking of trying some outdoor running this season, make sure you have a route mapped out and you are prepared for anything. As you get more comfortable, you’ll be able to go further and further. Something you may try this new year? Yes?

Do you costume?

jose-martinez-VzoMkhpPmJE-unsplash.jpg

Halloween! It’s coming!! So what are your plans? Do you have a costume already lined up? Do you hand out candy? Are you like me and do nothing? Yup, I don’t Halloween. I just eat the candy.

My parents immigrated to Canada when I was five years old. They could never get behind the concept of Halloween and trick or treating. They didn’t understand why anyone would go door to door asking for candy. Strangers essentially, giving your small child a treat! But before all of this can happen, you need to dress up in a costume (anything actually) to ring the bells of the treat givers and demand your booty! They thought it was quite rude and strongly discouraged us. Actually, they just said, ‘No! You’re not going door to door asking for candy from strangers dressed up as someone else! No!’ Case closed.

Now that I am not five years old and have children of my own, I’m faced with all the questions about why I don’t dress up. Everyone always seems to feel bad for my kids. Like they are missing out on some integral part of being a North American child! I grew up here, didn’t trick or treat , and I had a fantastic childhood. It’s possible! You don’t need to trick or treat to know how great of a place Canada is to live.

jorge-fernandez-Vu7PidtqKNk-unsplash.jpg

So my kids don’t trick or treat, but they dress up for school. They get a boatload of candy from their father and I, not to mention the stuff they bring home from school. They celebrate Halloween even though I don’t and it’s fine. Will I dress up for my shift if it falls on Halloween? Don’t count on it, but I will eat the candy!
