The Fresh Perspective...

You see the warning signs everywhere. Tanning is bad. Yet there is still a strange pride in getting some color from the sun. Everyone is still lounging poolside to get that golden glow. What’s up with that?

We all know how dangerous the sun can be. It’s no secret that it leads to skin cancer, makes our skin age faster and can give us some nasty sun stroke. So why aren’t we taking it more seriously? People compare and compliment tan lines like that isn’t skin damage. You don’t necessarily need to burn to be harming your skin. Failing to hydrate when spending time in higher temperatures puts you at risk for sunstroke. If you’ve never experienced it, you’re lucky but not immune. It’s not fun.

Any sun exposure is risky. Sunscreen is crucial but you should still be reapplying often and trying to find some shade as much as possible. You can still cause damage on a cloudy day! Wear a hat and never stop chugging that H2O. Your tan isn’t worth your life or even a few wrinkles 20 years down the line. You can’t have tan lines with no tan! ;)

If you are into music, I’m sure you have your own collection of summer tunes. Whether it’s just the songs that are playing on the radio all summer or some nostalgic playlist from summers past, summer music is all about making you feel as good as the sun does!

Summer is supposed to be a happy time when we all get to indulge in the fun activities that we’re deprived of all winter. Naturally, this must come with a soundtrack. I definitely believe that many artists strategically release certain tracks for that exact purpose. I remember “I’ve Got a Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas coming out June 2009 and was easily the song of the summer. This can set a tone for good vibes every time it comes on, for the entire summer.

When it comes to music, nostalgia has a strong pull on how it makes us feel. It can be music your parents played on that summer road trip as a kid or the playlist you curated for all your friends when you graduated high school. Anytime those songs come on, you’re instantly brought back to that moment. When that memory comes with a blazing sun and happy feelings, that song can bring you summer vibes in the middle of January!

Whatever your motivation for summer tunes is, now’s the time to set the tone! The weather’s warmer and we’re spending more time outdoors. Start building that playlist now!

SUMMER SKIN: tips to keep it healthy.

sunscreen

Summer= sun & heat.  Many people think that summer also equals more moisture. Surprise! Now more than ever we need to keep on top of keeping our skin healthy, and moisturized. That includes both your face and your body.

1. Wear a safe, non-toxic sunscreen. This will help protect from the harsh UV rays. Make sure to wear it daily (especially on your face) and to re-apply throughout day if you're out in the sun.

2. Exfoliate. From head to toe. This should be done about twice a week, and to simplify things, do it in the shower! A nice trick to give your body that extra exfoliation, and to get your blood flowing, is to use a dry brush right before you jump in the shower. Make sure you brush your skin in the the direction towards your heart. Also, there is a big difference between a body scrub, and a facial scrub, so make sure to keep that in mind.

3. Moisturize, constantly. In my honest opinion, you can never get enough moisture back into your skin. The sun sucks up more than we think. There's a moisturizer out there for everyone! Ideally, you should slap your favorite lotion on your entire body, after every shower. Don't forget your feet, you can even use a thicker cream morning and night on those guys. As for your face, use a daytime lotion with a built in SPF in the am and a moisturizing night cream in the pm.

4. Wear a hat. This is one that most people tend to forget about. The brim of most hats will help to protect/shade your face a little, but most importantly, hats will protect your scalp, which is an easy target for those sunny rays.

5. Drink a lot of water. I mean a lot. This makes a HUGE difference. It helps hydrate from the inside out, and isn't just topical like a moisturizer. Hydration is key, not only for our body's health, but our skin's health.

Don't forget, this includes all you men & boys out there too :P
