Podcasts. Life-changing or not?

Freshair Boutique

Have podcasts changed your life like they have mine? I honestly wonder what my life was like before I had a continuous story playing in my surroundings. I listen to them while I drive, while I clean, while I get ready in the mornings… Has it become an issue? I don’t think so.

If you’re new to the podcast world, get ready. Absolutely any topic is covered by somebody - some considerably better than others. Take your time, find your poison, and grab those headphones. What even is Netflix anymore?

Here’s some of our picks!

  1. Sword & Scale. If you’re fan of true crime stories, definitely take some time to check this podcast out. It features a variety of narrated true crime stories intertwined with interviews with criminals, witnesses, victims, authors, 911 call audio, witness testimony, trial audio, & interrogation tapes. Warning: Do not listen before bed or while home alone - The stories are very creepy and very real.

  2. Terrible, Thanks for Asking. You know how every day someone asks "how are you?" And even if you’re totally dying inside, you just say "fine," so everyone can go about their day? This show is the opposite of that. Hosted by author Nora McInerny, this is a funny/sad/uncomfortable podcast about talking honestly about our pain, our awkwardness, and being human.

  3. Night Vale. A podcast presented as a radio show for the fictional town of Night Vale, reporting on the strange events that occur within it. The series was created in 2012 by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor. If you like a good story time session, this will be your jam.

  4. True Crime All The Time. Another crime podcast. What can I say, I have a type. This podcast is put on by a duo, Mike & Gibby. There back and forth banter randomly throughout the episodes always makes me smile, giving a little break from the true crime stories they are telling. Great voices, great story tellers, and seem like genuinely great guys.

  5. Beautiful Stories From Anonymous People. One phone call. One hour. No names. No holds barred. That’s the premise behind Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People, hosted by comedian Chris Gethard. Every week, Chris opens the phone line to one anonymous caller, and he can’t hang up first, no matter what. From shocking confessions and family secrets to philosophical discussions and shameless self-promotion, anything can and will happen!

These are some top picks to check out. If you’re a podcast listener, comment below with any recommendations! We’re always on the hunt. If anyone else is like me, I binge podcasts episodes like it’s my job.

How To: Stop The Monday Blues

Freshair Boutique

one. Identify the problem.

Is there a lingering thought in your mind that seems overwhelming as you begin each week? Whether it's an unfinished project, an unfinished conversation or a work related issue. Take some time to get to the bottom of this to ease that anxious feeling at the beginning of each week.

two. Get enough sleep.

Sometimes weekends can seem busier than your week. This is a recipe for disaster for the upcoming week. Make sure you get enough sleep on the weekend as they really are there to help you recharge.

three. Be positive.

If you go into a week with a bad attitude, you're going to have a bad week. Or, at least a bad start to your week. Monday is just another day and will be over before you know it! If you go into the day ready for action, the chances of it flying by will be much more likely.

four. Make someone else happy.

The feeling of bringing joy to someone, making them smile, may be just what you need to snap you out of your Monday funk. Bring a co-worker their favourite coffee, tell a friend how much you love them, or make your [family, spouse, partner, kids] their favourite dinner. Even the smallest gestures make a difference and will make you feel happier while making someone else smile.

five. Dress like a pro.

If you go into Monday with a drab outfit you may not be able to help but feel a little sluggish. Try spicing up your wardrobe and wearing some bright fun colours, or adding a bright tuque. This is an easy way to put a little pep in your step.

six. Turn up the tunes!

Monday's are allowed to feel like a party. Get that speaker on and rock out while you get ready or while you drive to work. Seriously, this works.

seven. surround yourself with positive people.

- It really makes a difference who you surround yourself with. Always feel like so and so is putting a damper on everything, regardless of the topic? Maybe spend less time socializing with that person, or, check in with them to see if everything is okay. It's draining to complain or be around a complainer. If it were me, I'd prefer to know I was doing it so I could snap out of it!

the fresh pespective...

Freshair Boutique

….And to all a goodnight!

Wowwwweeeeee! Another year in the books! Just like that it’s time for new beginnings, new lists and new goals! 2018 has been a whirlwind of a year for Freshair. We saw some really great stylists move on to new and amazing endeavors, and with them some fantastic clients as well. We will miss you all!

We have added some new stylists to our crew and I’m very excited to see what 2019 brings to them and to our lovely little location here on Academy Road! To all of our loyal clients and new subscribers, THANK YOU! It’s all of you that make this whole gig so much more interesting.

When I was thinking of a way to communicate my gratitude, I couldn’t help but think of all the times we say thank you and say it with very little conviction. We’re taught as young children to always say please and thank you like it’s verbiage necessary for living. And though yes, saying please and thank you is polite, it is now just that. Daily verbiage.

Thank you is almost so watered down that I’m not sure it really does the best job of showing sincere gratitude. When was the last time you said thank you? When was the last time you REALLY thanked someone for something? When was the last time you went out of your way to make a connection with someone who did something really nice to/for you?

What I Am trying to say is much gratefulness and gratitude for all of you that either work at Freshair Boutique or patronize our business. all the best to you and your families and remember that we appreciate you all! Blessings and I hope to see you in the new year!

Praise Okwumabua’s go-to fancy hair styles

Hi there! I’m Praise and I’m the owner of Freshair Boutique! I’m also one of the three senior stylists that work at this shop and I have attended my fair share of fancy events and parties. While doing a little scavenging in my iPhone, (I’m a selfie connoisseur) I found some of my favorite ‘fancy do’ images.

In my opinion, what usually makes a hairstyle fancy is based on a few things. 1) Volume, 2) Stay in placeness (not a word…) and 3) Height. While I have seen many formal fashion houses and party goers rock the slick bun (no height OR volume), this look does have number 2, staying in place abilities.

So when you are styling your hair for your next fancy thang, remember my three points. Or don’t, I’m cool with whatever you’re cool with! Oh yeah, I forgot another really easy way to gussie up your hair do is to add a little something. Brooches, sparkly pins or even bow ties can really take a bland hair do to the next level!

Have a good time out there and remember to be safe!
